APW power supply dead with no output after a grid surge

A representative Bitmain APW-series PSU repair. The APW converts AC mains through a PFC stage and high-current switching section down to the ~12–15 V rail that powers the miner.

Reported symptom
After a storm, the miner would not power on at all. The PSU was completely dead — no 12 V output, no fan spin — with a faint burnt smell.
On-bench diagnosis
With no output rail, we worked back from the primary side: the input fuse was open and a primary-side switching MOSFET had shorted, so the PFC bus never came up. There was scorching around the switching stage and one rectifier tested leaky.
Root cause
A mains surge/overvoltage event drove the primary switching stage past its limits, blowing the MOSFET and fuse and stressing the PFC and rectifier — the classic cascade behind a "totally dead" APW.
The repair
We replaced the fuse, the shorted MOSFET and the leaky rectifier with original-spec parts, verified the PFC controller and capacitor bank, and cleaned up the scorched area before bringing the unit up on a current-limited supply.
