Antminer Z15 Zero Hashrate & Missing Chips (X0X) — Causes & Fix
A Z15 board reading 0 hashrate or showing a missing-chip / X0X pattern is one of the most common faults we see. Here's what it actually means, what you can safely check yourself, and when it needs chip-level repair.

Why one bad chip zeroes the whole board
Each Antminer Z15 hashboard carries three BM1746 "Black Rhino" ASIC chips wired in a serial chain. Data enters the first chip, passes through the second, and returns from the third. If any link in that chain breaks — a dead die, a cracked BGA solder joint, or a collapsed core-voltage rail — the signal never completes the loop, and the control board reports the entire board as 0 hashrate or shows a missing-chip (X0X) pattern.
That's why "0 hashrate" on a Z15 is almost never a software issue — it's a physical fault on the board that has to be found and repaired at the component level.

Whole board = 0 hashrate
Broken serial chain — one dead BM1746 chip or a shorted core-voltage domain stops the entire board
Reseat data ribbon & power; try in a known-good slot/PSU
Missing chips / "X0X" pattern
A specific ASIC stopped responding — cracked BGA joint or failed die at that chain position
Note which position drops out from the kernel log
Board present but not hashing
Communication (UART/I²C) fault or a dead LDO / PLL rail feeding the chips
Confirm the board is detected but reports 0 accepted shares
Drops out when warm
Thermal-fatigued solder joint that opens as the board heats up
See if it hashes cold then fails after a few minutes
Before you send it: 5 things to try yourself
- Reseat the data ribbon cable and the power connectors on the problem board.
- Swap the board into a known-good slot (and try a known-good PSU) — this tells you if the fault is the board or the control board/PSU.
- Blow out dust and check the heatsinks aren't clogged (heat causes drop-outs).
- Reflash the latest firmware and reboot — rules out a corrupted config.
- Note the exact kernel-log line (the chip count / X0X position). That tells a technician where the chain breaks.
If the board still reads 0 or shows missing chips after all of that, the fault is on the board itself — and fixing it means locating the exact failed chip or rail and doing BGA-level rework.
How we repair a 0-hashrate Z15
On the bench we run the board on a test fixture, map resistance across each voltage domain to find shorts before applying power, then use thermal imaging under load to spot the chip that isn't drawing current. The failed BM1746 is reballed/replaced with a genuine Bitmain chip, the core-voltage and LDO/PLL rails are verified, and the board runs a 24-hour burn-in before it ships back.
